Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
The muscles of the pelvic floor run from the pubic bone in the front to the tailbone at the back. This ‘basket’ of muscles support organs against gravity and intra-abdominal pressure changes. They play a role in bowel and bladder control as well as sexual function. They also help to support joints surrounding the pelvis as well as aiding in unloading the spine.
Physiotherapists who treat the pelvic floor have received additional training in understanding the anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor. They can assess and treat individuals who are having concerns around pelvic pain, bladder and bowel function, sexual health and organ prolapse.
Some examples of conditions Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy can help with:
-
Urinary or fecal incontinence
-
Pregnancy/Postpartum recovery
-
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
-
Pain during sexual intercourse
-
Erectile pain or dysfunction
-
Tailbone pain
During your assessment, your Physiotherapist will discuss concerns. This is the time for you to tell your story and help your practitioner understand what problems you are having; how long they have been going on for, the impact they are having on your life, and what goals you would like your treatment to work towards. As with any type of physiotherapy assessment and treatment, there will be discussion and collaboration throughout in a safe and supportive environment.
After the initial discussion an external examination may take place including assessment of posture, breathing, hips, pelvis and lower back function. If appropriate, and with consent, an internal examination may be suggested to better assess muscle tone, tension, and coordination of structures that cannot be assessed as well externally.
Although an internal exam can give the most information on your current issues, it is in no way a requirement when seeing a Physiotherapist for the pelvic floor.
After the assessment part of your session your practitioner will discuss any findings, what they mean, answer any questions, and together you will create a personalized treatment plan to work towards improving your condition.
